This morning I found this beetle in the garden. I've never seen anything like it before and have no idea what it is so I'm really hoping that someone reading this post can identify it for me (please)!
**EDIT**: Thanks to Ryan Clark who ID'd my beetle for me via Twitter. It is in fact a Rose Chafer (Cetonia aurata)! Very cool little thing indeed and it was also very noisy in flight too.
This evening I paid a quick visit to my patch. First I headed to the pools where the Lapwing chicks are growing bigger day by day and there was quite a lot of commotion caused by some Carrion Crows. Afterwards I then headed round to the scrubby area known as West End and whilst it was a bit too windy to really hear anything, the Skylarks on the airfield were definitely making themselves heard!!
I saw lots of young birds on the way back to the car, including Greenfinch, Bullfinch, Great Tit, Long-tailed Tit and Blue Tit! And I could hear many more cheeping away in the bramble and willow scrub!
I didn't have my proper camera with me, as usual, due to my back so you'll just have to make do with some photos I took on my phone:
